BIG COUNTRY SENIOR SPORTS SOCIETY - JUNE NEWSLETTER 2025

We have finally completed all of our qualifiers and are looking forward to going to Leduc for the Alberta 55 Plus Provincial Games, August 21 – 24. There are still fills in a few sports and activities, so if you are interested in attending these games there is a list of openings at the end of the newsletter.

The official website for the games is leduc55plusgames.ca. They won’t have all of the zone entries until June 30^th, so there are no event schedules yet, but there is information about the venues, hotels, etc. Following is the games schedule:

A Meet & Greet ride for cyclists convened May 30^th at the Crossfield Arena. There were seventeen cyclists from Zone 2 and 3, fourteen men and three women, aged 60-80, who rode their chosen distance and then had lunch at the Stacked Bistro and Bakery. Area 6 Director Don James was in charge of this event and hopes to have future Meet and Greet rides around Zone 2.

We have eight cyclists confirmed for Leduc – Garry Cusack, Ralph Hindle, Don James, Maggie Nichol Bowen, Jeff Coward, Jim Milman and Brent Gross

Doug Campbell hosted twelve bocce players in Cochrane on May 31^st, and the team of Sharon Barnden, Myrna Fink, Jennifer MacKenzie and Shirley Smith will represent Zone 2 in Leduc in the 70+ category.

Snooker was held on June 3^rd at the Pioneer Trail Seniors Centre in Drumheller.  The winner in 55+ was Mike Hofer and in 70+ was Jon Hansen and they are both going to the Provincial Games.  Linda Traquair hosted the tournament and eleven people competed.

Joss Binns had thirty-one golfers in Strathmore on June 5^th for the Golf qualifier and it looks like about sixteen players will compete in Leduc. On the women’s side we have Deb Dancey, Kim Dumanowski, Christine Anderson, Michele Power, Linda Porter, Karen Kirkeby, Charlie Freemont, Sylvia Bozzo, Linda Traquair and Jean Whyte. The men include Tim Hodges, Robin Gall, Vic McLelland, Ryan Wecker, Howard Northcott and Joss Binns.

There was a fun Track and Field meet on June 6^th with Zone 3 in Calgary and confirmed for Leduc so far are Lyndon Emro, Norma Dawson, Jane Concannon, Brian Hill, Randy Molitor, Wendy Laughlin, Louie Bastos, Gord Crowell, Lynda Gross, Ernie Robson, Ray Hoppins and Jim Vanglist.

Culture will be held in Airdrie on June 18^th and all intentions of entries were to be in to Linda Traquair by June 9^th.

 Zone 2 currently has about 370 members and over 200 played in qualifiers and several played in more than one qualifier. As of today, we have 140 confirmed to go the Provincial Games in Leduc.

There is no 5-Pin Bowling in Leduc. It was decided that we would try to have a qualifier and an Open Provincial Bowling Tournament in the Fall, once the leagues have started up again.

If you want to go to Leduc and did not qualify or missed a qualifier, there is still time to enter. We have quite a few fills but we do need to know by Friday, June 13^th if you are interested.

There are fills available in Golf, Pickleball, Bocce 55+, Badminton, Euchre, Horseshoes, Military Whist, Scrabble and Tennis.

The registration for Leduc is $100 which covers your lunches and the banquet, and there is an extra charge of $90 for Golf green fees and $30 for each Pickleball event to help cover the cost of the computerized scoring and officials.
