There was a 5-pin Bowling Provincial Championship in Medicine Hat in May and our zone was well represented. In the team event in the 65+ age group from the Olds/Carstairs area, Les Markham, Dennis Thompson, John Russell, Rick Evans and Debra McKinnon won the Gold medal. The Silver medal in the same age group went to the Cochrane team of Tracy Hindle, Sharon Barnden, Karen Stiles, Therese Reist and Myrna Fink. In the singles event, Sandra Irwin from Hanna won the Gold medal in 75+ Ladies, and in the 75+ Men, Les Markham of Carstairs won Silver and Jim Milman from Drumheller, Bronze. Congratulations to all of our bowlers!
Don James, Area 6 Director Carstairs, organized a fun Cycle Ride on June 19th with nine riders, mostly from zone 3. He is planning on doing two more fun rides – in August and September, both west of Calgary.
Posters will be coming out soon for a Floor Shuffleboard fun day in High River, Thursday, August 13th and a Bridge fun tourney in Cochrane on Friday, August 14th. These will be open to members and friends and there will be no fee. Unfortunately, due to Winnipeg withdrawing their bid for the Canada 55+ games this year, there is not a lot going on.
The next Canada 55Plus Games will be in Regina, SK, August 21 - 24, 2028. There will be 12 mandatory events - 8-Ball Pool, 5-pin Bowling, Cribbage, Darts, Golf, Ice Curling, Ice Hockey – Men & Women, Pickleball, Slo-Pitch, Swimming, Tennis, and Track & Field. The 3 optional events will be Bridge (contract and duplicate), Stick Curling and Cornhole.
Alberta Provincials leading up to Canada Games will be in Fort McMurray August 12-15, 2027 and Grande Prairie in the Spring of 2028.
